FUNCTIONING OF INTERNET MERCHANT ACCOUNTS

Internet merchant accounts can be confusing to most newcomers into the merchant account system. There are various factors that have to be considered and understood before setting up an internet merchant account. You as a merchant must be aware of the possible risks that such an account entails, and the amount of payments you may have to make to your provider, for internet merchant accounts are quite expensive. In fact they are the most expensive of all merchant accounts, due to the high risk factor that is part of the package.

Internet merchant accounts have one basic facility that they provide to businessmen, which is to enable their business to accept and process payments made via credit cards. The process of accepting these cards till the transfer of funds is a very simple, and extremely fast one. In fact, the entire procedure can be divided into three basic sequential steps. These are as follows: -

1.     The customer makes their choices of goods to purchase from your website, and using the shopping cart selects those items, and hits the check out button. A form then pops up onto the screen which is called a secure order form, where the customer needs to enter their card and other details.

2.     The next step involves the sending of the payment form to the customer’s card association for approval of funds and card validity. The information is sent in an encrypted format for added security, via a secure portal called the payment gateway.

3.     Then the Visa or MasterCard association checks the card, and verifies existence of funds, checks for expiry date and any other normal functions that they follow. If they find that everything is ok and the transaction can be authorized they send a transaction code to the customer who can have this as a reference number. Once the code is sent, the fund transfer stage starts, wherein the amount of purchase is debited from the customer’s bank account, and simultaneously credited in the merchant account. Thus the transaction is completed within seconds, and by the time it is done the customer can also log off from the website, and the goods will be well on their way to him.

Another important aspect that most of the internet merchant accounts provide is a confirmation screen, which is sent to the customers computer after the transaction is authorised, stating the details of the transaction and the merchants information as well. When setting up internet merchant accounts for the first time, a merchant would normally tend to go for a third party service provider for they come cheaper and easier. However, to avoid fraud risks and future problems with your account, it is advised to always choose an authorized provider for enabling your merchant account online. They give you a secure network, and in the longer run they turn out to be much cheaper and reliable as well. And lastly, you must make sure that you receive your monthly statements from your provider to keep track of all your transactions and sales made, and check that the provider has been functioning efficiently as well.
