CREDIT CARD PROCESSOR

Credit card processing is today one of the main aspects of any merchants business, due to the globalisation and spread out nature of the world’s markets. It is of course a very easy process, taking merely a few seconds to complete transactions using the credit card system. At the same time, it gives merchants numerous advantages, like being cost efficient, saving a lot of time for both merchant and customer, as well as giving the customer a wider range of options when it comes to payments, thus enabling long term relation sustenance.

The entity which goes through with the actual processing part of the credit card processing system is known as a credit card processor. It is only a term used for such a body which processes the transaction once an order is placed. The credit card processor will get together all information that can be provided from different sources like websites, phone terminal point, a swipe terminal at retail outlets etc. this data is then made to go through a sequence of security tests, in order to make sure that the cardholder’s bank account with the card holds sufficient funds to cover then required amount of expense. Checks are also made to find out whether the card is a lost or stolen one, in case a report has been lodged. The credit card processor has to confirm the customer’s billing address that was given when the order was placed, along with the card numbers, where the name of the holder and the expiration date is mentioned. The processor also verifies the security code found on the back of the card and confirms that it is the same one entered at the time of ordering.

Once the credit card processor validates all of the above criteria, the funds get directed into the merchant bank checking account, and there is a debit made into the cardholder’s bank account. If the cardholder requests for a refund to be made then the credit card processor has to handle the reverse procedure, of deducting funds out of the merchant account and re directing it to the customers account. The entire process takes about 2 to 3 business days from the date of transaction to be completed.

In other circumstances, when the merchant running an internet based system has established a feature to use a recurring bill, the funds will be processed on a regular basis automatically, according to their programming at pre-set durations, be it weekly or daily or even monthly. In such conditions, the task of the credit card processor becomes almost negligible, thus in some cases not requiring one at all. However, it is advisable to merchants to consider having a credit card processor instead of opting for the automated system, as such a processor would be better equipped to handle contingencies and make sure that nothing goes amiss during vital transactions. Plus, a processor’s job of checking and re-checking all data is the most important aspect of the whole credit card processing cycle.
